Bruce Johnson, Project Lead of The
Google Web Toolkit (GWT) talks to IndicThreads about the GWT framework, it's
capabilities, the team mission and more. He talks about how GWT helps
developers build high-end Ajax applications using Java and without worrying
about the cross-browser quirks.
Google Web Toolkit isn't just another way to create mediocre Ajax applications

Recently, Google released from beta its Google Web Toolkit. Google Web Toolkit (GWT) is an open source Java software development framework that makes writing AJAX applications like Google Maps and Gmail easy for developers who don't speak browser quirks as a second language. Phil and Scott talk to Bruce Johnson, one if its co-creators.
GWT lets you avoid many of these headaches while offering your users the same dynamic, standards-compliant experience. You write your front end in the Java programming language, and the GWT compiler converts your Java classes to browser-compliant JavaScript and HTML. Bruce talks about how he got involved with the project. He states that while he has always been in development, he believes that the user interface is tremendously important.
Bruce also gives a number of examples of projects that took advantage of GWT. While the discussion is often technical in nature, Bruce is able to clearly define what GWT can do for developers.

IE's Memory Leak Fix Greatly ExaggeratedWhen I saw this article, I nearly spilled tea all over the keyboard. They really fixed this issue? You mean I can untangle all the painful code in GWT that works around this issue, diligently cleaning up all its circular DOM references under all sorts of circumstances?

I'm on vacation. Two weeks!
No Internet connection, no mobile phone, no calls from customers, no cars, no
subway, no Paris, just my beloved and my children.
No coding, no pair-programing, no stand-up meeting, no planning games, just
cooking, sleeping, reading literature, swimming in lake, walking in forest,
building wood hut,...
I will be in my grand-pa
farm.

The cats pyjamasThere is a provocative post with Seam conspiracy theory questioning the motivation behind the creation of that Java web frameworks...I don't know about Seam but the one I wonder most about is Google Web Toolkit.

GTTSE and GWTYesterday I had a chat with Schott Blum of Google, who works on GWT (Google Web Toolkit) and gave an implementation on their Java to Javascript compiler and all the optimizations they are doing there. We talked, among other things, about why Google develops a framework to basically make it easier to compete with them.

GWT, JSF, declarative markup, and lunch with GavinJust had an interesting lunch with Gavin King (original author of Hibernate and Seam), and came up with a somewhat crazy idea that needs more eyeballs on it.

Why not ?Perhaps the title of this entry is slightly misleading, but it comes close to the truth. In this entry I present a guy named Steve, and his announcement that gave me some insight to the future of web development.

Flex versus PilgrimJoel Webber on the GWT team said at GDD07 (I would post a YouTube link, but no one has posted video of the GDD07 fireside chats yet, why the heck not?) that he really wants to build a declarative markup system for GWT.

Google Web Toolkit: Born again childA small group of very competent people have produced the Google Web Toolkit, a way for web practitioners, in particular Java application specialists, to program both GUI and backend in a single sway. A feat of no small importance, if you consider that a Javascript GUI is very costly to produce and especially to maintain (it breaks easily as browsers change), and needs permanent attention from specialists of the script. Javascript debuggers are rare and have an hourly rate close to the unit price of those 1975 watch calculators. This must be the reason why GWT has just passed the one million download mark.
